I remember the first time I laid down on a massage table to have a reiki session. I had no idea what to expect, but went in open-minded, with a healthy dose of skepticism.
I had mentioned to a friend that I was going to book a massage to decompress during a busy season of life where I was experiencing some aches and pains that I knew were related to stress. She suggested I try a Reiki session instead.
I'd heard of Reiki, but didn't really know what it was so I googled a local practitioner and booked an appointment. During my first session, I felt a wave of relaxation wash over me that was deeper than in any massage I'd ever had. I felt tingling and what felt like energy moving throughout my body, especially in my legs.
After the session, I left feeling incredibly calm and relaxed and the pain in my lower back I'd been experiencing had definitely loosened. I felt lighter for the rest of the day and slept like a baby that night.
In 2023 when my dad was diagnosed with cancer, I started looking for a Reiki Practitioner to work with him. I then decided to become certified myself and used my Reiki to support both my dad and many other friends and family over the next couple of years. After seeing how supportive Reiki can be, I now offer sessions with clients.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. It is rooted in the belief that life force energy flows through all living things. This energy, often referred to as "ki" or "chi," is essential to our well-being, and when it becomes imbalanced, it can lead to physical, emotional, or mental distress.
The practice of Reiki is based on the principle that the flow of this life force energy can be harnessed and channeled by a trained practitioner to restore balance and harmony. During a Reiki session, a practitioner channels life force energy through their hands, either by lightly touching or hovering over specific areas of the body. This gentle, non-invasive technique works to clear energetic blockages, promote deep relaxation, and support healing at all levels.
In today’s world, many people experience heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and emotional turbulence, which can take a toll on physical and mental health. Reiki helps to calm the nervous system, allowing the body to enter a state of deep rest and repair. This promotes the body's natural healing abilities, allowing you to feel more centered, grounded, and peaceful. Many clients report relief from symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, and fatigue, as well as increased energy and clarity.
Beyond its calming effects, Reiki can also support emotional healing. It is often used to help release negative emotions, such as grief, anger, or fear, and to promote a sense of clarity and emotional balance. This makes Reiki a valuable complementary therapy for those dealing with anxiety, depression, or emotional trauma.
While Reiki is not a substitute for medical treatment, it can be a powerful addition to a holistic wellness routine, encouraging self-healing and fostering a greater sense of overall harmony and well-being.
